About Stropkey Nurseries, Inc.
Our nursery was founded in 1938 by the late John G. Stropkey. After his passing in 1970, F. Joseph and Gregory J. Stropkey operated the nursery until Joseph's death in 1992. At this time, John V. and Paul Stropkey (son - third generation) purchased the nursery and the name was changed from John G. Stropkey and Sons to its present name Stropkey Nurseries, Inc. In March 2005, we announced the acquisition of the assets of Seven Springs Nursery. With this acquisition, we were able to introduce Chamaecyparis Vintage Gold and Juniperus Chinensis Greg's Gold to our stock. Also, Gregory J. Stropkey came on board as the Production Manager of what is now called the Hale Road Farm.
In 2017, Teresa Stropkey (Paul’s wife) started taking on more of the office duties allowing John to slowly start stepping away. John V. Stropkey, after battling health issues, past away in Feburary of 2020. Paul then took full ownership of the business and Teresa took over the role of Office Manager. In August of 2022, Greg retired after 17 years with Stropkey Nurseries Inc. On January 1, 2023, after many years as our summer help and after graduating from Kent State University on December 17, 2022, we hired Matthew P. Stropkey (Paul and Teresa’s youngest son) as Production Manager for Stropkey Nureries, Inc.
We have 16 acres of containers, seed, and liner beds. Summer and Winter propagation results in approximately 300,000 cuttings and seedlings. We have 50+ acres of deciduous shrubs and broad leaf evergreens which are grown on a two year program. Stock is cultured for growing in containers. We raise a general line of shrubs, evergreens, and a few choice perennials, grasses, and hostas. Some of our most popular plants are the French and Dwarf Lilacs, Deciduous and Evergreen Azaleas, Ilex varieties, Forsythia Lynwood Gold, Gold Thread Cypress and Viburnum Stropkey Select. We have stock available in potted liners, bare root, select B&B, and containers (1, 2, 3, 5, 5 squat and a few select 10 gallon).
Many growers depend on us for liners and bare root items year after year. We are PROUD of our growing nursery and welcome visitors by appointment.
